Story

Kelly's third cd is a full band production, with steel and electric slide, standup bass, drums, and fine harmonies, even some soprano sax and mandolin. He picked some of his faves from the first two cds and gave them full treatment, along with a batch of great new tunes. From the almost bluegrassy Going Up the Road, to a jazzy Old Fashioned Romance, a funked up Sarah Jane to the bluesy You Just Startin', it may seem all over the map, but it's all the same map. The twin slides are a treat, and the vocal arrangements are sweet.

Story

not a song about a beauty queen!

what could go wrong did

Lyrics

first i met ya

knew i'd get ya

never bet ya it'd

take this long

now it's my turn

think i would learn

watch the bridge burn

what went wrong

miss virginia

what got in ya

why you running away

miss virginia

what got in ya

where you going to today

i come back

to a cold empty shack

lights are blown

and there's nobody home

miss virginia

what got in ya

why you running away

fire in ya

miss virginia

gonna win ya

watch me now

what do i do

first i find you

make a way through

this somehow

miss virginia.....

gonna please ya

yes and appease ya

i ain't gonna tease ya

give it to you straight

we're gonna make it

ain't gonna break it

cause i couldn't take it

not in my state

miss virginia.....

Story

a song about an oops

but hey, nothing too serious here

Lyrics

honey i thought maybe you'd be mine

even if it took me a little bit of time

where was i when you said i do

letting me look deep into those eyes

half a step away from earthly paradise

where was i when you bid adieu

damn your eyes for being so pretty

damn your eyes for being so nice

damn your eyes and the rest of you too

damn your eyes for being all sugar

damn your eyes for being all spice

damn your eyes for making me so blue

honey i'm patient with the fishing pole

i'm guessing i was fishing at the wrong damn hole

where was i when you said i do

leading me on with your perfect smile

making me think we're going to walk the aisle

where was i when you bid adieu

damn your eyes for being so pretty...

honey i guess maybe i'm a fool

thinking i could win you by being mister cool

where was i when you said i do

leaving me here holding nothing but air

where's that guy said all in love's fair

where was i when you bid adieu

damn your eyes for being so pretty...

damn your eyes for making me love you

Story

scribbled on a scrap of paper in twenty minutes

sitting on a park bench

stuffed in a pocket and forgotten about for some time

no idea where this song came from

who or what it's about

Lyrics

so you made it on the hit parade

top of the heap

now it seems like a big charade

but they're playing for keeps

so you made it on the hit parade

and it's getting deep

before you go and have a big tirade

get a good night's sleep

you don't like it when they tell you what to do

you don't like it when your plans fall through

you want to be the one that's always in command

you want to be the one you want to be the man

so you made it on the hit parade

pick of the week

and the media cavalcade

demands you speak

so you made it on the hit parade

should be hitting your peak

now it seems like a masquerade

but there's no mystique

you don't like it...

you don't like it...

so you made it on the hit parade

Story

living with room mates can be challenging

and then sometimes it's just over the top

this whole event happened in even less time

than it takes to sing the song

Lyrics

big bam boom in the middle of the night

waking me up give me quite a fright

buddy's beating on the window screaming in the dark

says give me back my woman dogs begin to bark

making a ruckus in the whole neighborhood

don't know what's the matter but it don't sound good

big bam boom in the middle of the night

sounds pretty evil like there's going to be a fight

now i'm wide awake start to realize

this ain't just close to home it's right before my eyes

roomie brought a gal home from the saloon

her ex husband followed after and he's crazy as a loon

then i thought i heard a woman say something like

please don't kill him he's the father of my children

i don't want to tell them that their daddy done gone

i thought i heard my room mate say what

she said please don't kill him he's the father of my children

i don't want to tell them that their daddy done gone

you never told me you was married

big boom bam heard the screen door slam

dogs going nuts here come the police van

now i start to think we'll make the six o'clock news

she run out the door carrying her shoes

takes buddy by the arm leads the man away

room mate strands between third and home base

she said please don't kill him he's the father of my children

i don't want to tell them that their daddy done gone

please don't kill him he's the father of my children

i don't want to tell them that their daddy done gone

Story

a song for a friend

he has style

girls like that

Lyrics

i'm her mister she's my missus

whisper sweet nothings she give me kisses

old fashioned romance

doing that sweet dance again

she ain't sore when i hold the door

she don't mind i lead on the floor

old fashioned romance

doing that sweet dance again

i ain't saying i bring home the bacon

but i don't think she's home doing the bakin'

you got to know how to treat a gal

princess and strumpet and a long lost pal

had our fill well i'll pay the bill

i'm her jack and she's my jill

old fashioned romance

doing that sweet dance again

she's got some classy kind of chassis

i kind of like it when she gets sassy

old fashioned romance

doing that sweet dance again

i ain't saying i bring home the bacon

but i don't think she's home doing the bakin'

you got to know how to treat a gal

princess strumpet long lost pal

Story

a song about a girl

carolina is a state in my mind

Lyrics

well i'm on my way to carolina

take the live long day to carolina

going to make it by night

see it by the first starlight

yeah i'm on my way to carolina

now some like the short straight ride

i take my own sweet time

there's this girl i know in carolina

she's some sweet girl i know in carolina

well she talk like only southern girls could

crazy in a way that's good

there's this girl i know in carolina

now some like the short straight ride

i take my own sweet time

sarah jane that's her name

green eyes and long brown hair

she smile at me i get weak in the knees

and i don't have a prayer

she don't want me leaving carolina

sure don't want me leaving carolina

says i could stay here the rest of my life

yeah she'd make a pretty fine wife

sure don't feel like leaving carolina

now some like the short straight ride

i take my own sweet time

sarah jane that's her name

green eyes and long brown hair

she smile at me i get weak in the knees

and i don't have a prayer

it's a sunny day in carolina

i sure don't feel like leaving carolina

it's a sunny day in carolina

well i sure don't feel like leaving carolina

Story

this song now has many verses

but i only sing five at a time

i never know which ones

and sometimes i even make one up on the spot

Lyrics

wish i was in new orleans

living well beyond my means

bon temps roulez till daylight

start again when day turns night

maybe some day

i'll find my way

i'll up and go

then i won't have to wish no mo'

wish i was in birmingham

way down south in alabam

sip mint juleps till sundown

dress up nice and paint the town

maybe some day...

wish i was in santa cruz

with some sand inside my shoes

crashing surf and sunny days

just a taste of california haze

maybe some day...

wish i was in new south wales

with a pint of vic bitter ale

way down under's the place to be

with the 'roos and a wallaby

maybe some day...

wish i was in dublin town

drinking that fine guinness down

like to go but i believe

it would be too hard to leave

maybe some day...

no i won't have to wish no mo'
